When I was a teenager, there was a girl in my English literature class called Helen. She was intelligent with a quirky sense of humor. I wish that we hadn't failed her. That we had opened up about mental health, about feelings, because we are all both light and darkness.

Why a writer becomes a data analyst.
In the early 2000s, I found myself finishing a D.H. Lawrence novel and my Master's degree in English Literature, knowing that I couldn’t postpone the inevitable. Soon I’d have to become an adult and join the workforce of worker bees that being an adult demands.

In 2018, I found myself sitting in the waiting room of an ex-Communist hospital in Prague. The wall art outside was a metallic relief of hardworking peasant women carrying baskets as men with weathered faces plowed bountiful fields. My heart fluttered.
